Each of these are good programs. We prefer Dreamweaver only because we don't have as much experience with GoLive. We also highly recommend reading the manual. You will be happier in the long run. Download one of these 30-day free trials and try it out for yourself. And remember, a good net-izen practices good design.
• Webdesign Programs
WYSIWYG Editors (What you see is what you get...):
• Macromedia Dreamweaver: This is our favorite. It's what we use here and it's what we are most comfortable with. But almost anything will work.
• Adobe GoLive: We tried this but just had to throw our hands in the air and bow to the Dreamweaver gods. Some people prefer GoLive and that's fine, too.
• WebDesign by Rave Software: WebDesign is a drag-and-drop style package for the Mac. It might be limiting. We don't really know. We haven't spent much time with it.
• Freeway by SoftPress: Freeway is a WYSIWYG design package loosely based on the Quark XPress interface. It's for Mac.
• iWeb: If you have a newer Apple Computer this should be standard with iLife on your machine. It will allow you to do image or text based web editing, but currently it doesn't have an internal FTP program, so you'll need to upload using a true FTP client. It's still a 1.0 right now, but we like where we think it's going.
Text Based HTML Editors
• BBEdit by BareBones: BBEdit is a text-editor with some excellent HTML and PERL tools. Not for the visually-oriented. Available for the Mac ONLY so far.
• Text Mate: Similar to BBEdit but a little bit cheaper. It's a great text-based-editor, if you like the photoshop style this is not for you, but if you are texting HTMLer you'll love it.
