Setting Up a New Site & Uploading

Transmit is a great FTP program for MAC's. It's easy to use and very effective. The following will show how to log-in and upload files.

  1. Go ahead and open Transmit. You will see the screen is split into two sections. The log-in area will be on your right.
  2. Make sure the "Connect" tab is highlighted as below, and enter the following information:
    • Server- this is going to be the address to your FTP space. It will always be ftp.your_domain_name.com
    • Username- your username is set-up when you create your order.
    • Password- usually a server generated password. You can find it where you found your username.
You can find this information either in the dogbark account manager, or in the email that we sent you when you signed up for your dogbark account.
    • Initial Path and Port- go ahead and leave those as they are.
    • Protocol- this should say FTP by default, leave that as FTP as well.
  3. Go ahead and hit the "connect" button on the bottom right hand side. At this point you should be in the main area of the program. If you are not double check your username and password, most log in mistakes happen right there.

  4. Now that you are in, here are some of the basics of the transmit interface:
    • You'll see that the screen is separated into two halves.
    • The left hand side is going to be "Your Stuff." This is everything that is available on the hard drive of your MAC. See below:

      transmit left
    • The right hand side is going to be "Their Stuff." This is everything that you exists on the server for your website.

      transmit right
    • The most important folder there is the "HTDOCS" folder. In order for something to be visible on your website, you must upload it to this "HTDOCS" folder.
  5. Now it's time to upload. All you have to do is select a file in "YOUR STUFF" and drag it across the screen to "THEIR STUFF." Make sure it goes in the HTDOCS" folder and you'll be good to go.
  6. A couple of small notes on uploading and FTP
    • The main page of your website should be called "index.html" or "index.php" Whatever extension you are using, you must have the index page. This is what every browser will look for when it looks in your HTDOCS folder for files.
    • You can create many different folders to drop files for your clients if you have a need for that. If you create a folder inside of your HTDOCS folder and call it "Client1" (no spaces are allowed). Then drop the file you would like them to see in that folder, say it's called "transmit.png" you would send them this link: http://www.yourdomainname.com/Client1/transmit.png and they could get the file straight from there.

** If you are using our Advanced or Pro plan, you will have access to proFTP. You will need to call us to get these folders set up for you. Each folder will have a username and a password for the person accessing them. But if you look on the main level of your site, you'll see an FTP folder. In this folder you'll find the usernames you have given us will become folders inside of the FTP folder. Simply drop the files you want to give your FTP user in their specific folders, and give them the respective username and password to log in and you are good to go.
