Moving your webhosting seems like a daunting task to many of our customers, until they have actually gone through the process with us. Here are some helpful hints to make your move as seamless as possible.

  1. Allow plenty of time to make the transition. We've found that clients often try to move their site hosting right before a major even occurs for their business. This causes you to be crunched for time. You need at allow *at least* 24 hours to make a hosting change, though we'd recommend more like 48-72 if you want to be safe.
  2. Make sure your domain name registration is up to date. That includes not only the expiration date, but also all of your contact information. You'll also want to be sure that you have your login username and password handy for the registrar's site since you'll be needing that soon enough.
  3. Go ahead and grab a copy of your website files from your current host. If you use a webmaster, confirm that they have a local copy of your site. If you use a mySQL database be sure to get a current "dump" of that as well.
  4. Know what you're using right now. How much storage, how your email should route, and if you will need extra FTP logins.
  5. If you have a more complicated site, you'll need confirm versions of the languages that your site uses, and any additional modules that you use. These might include:
    • PHP
    • mySQL
    • Perl
    • image libraries like imagemagick and gdlib
    • any additional modules like curl, or encryption modules like blowfish
