What must you know? “Must know” maybe a bit of an overstatement, but there are a few things we think would be beneficial for you to have a basic understanding of. After all, our modus operandi is to provide you with information to your benefit.
What Makes Us Different.
Some might say we are "special" or even "odd" but there are a few things that truly make us different than others in our business.
We own our own servers.
This is important because some "hosts" are simply renting space or reselling space on servers they have no jurisdiction over. For you, this means that if you have a special requirement or need something outside of "normal" then we can likely accommodate your desires without calling a special session of congress.
We are owners of the company.
When you call, you have a 4 out of 5 chance that you'll be talking to an owner of the company. It's for this reason that you'll find we care a little more than some hourly worker sitting in a cube in the middle of a foreign country. I guess this is a case where ownership has its benefits ... to you.
We are debt free.
Unlike other companies that are squeezed by large amounts of debt and answer to some committee of investors we answer only to ourselves, and you. We don't have any debt hanging over our heads ... and we don't have the grim reaper lurking over our company.
We're 10 years old and counting.
While there are times we like to act our shoe size rather than our age, we as a company are a muture ten years old. We started in early 1999 and even thrived during the dot-bomb. We continue to maintain our growth and strength and are looking forward to what the next ten years holds.
Hosting: Getting Started.
You know, sometimes the hardest thing to do is start. It's like Walt Disney said, "The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." Well, we'll be happy to hold your hand as you put your words to action.
Step 1: Register a Domain Name.
If you don't already have a domain name then it's time to join the crowd. You can register a name with our sister company FYI NIC.
A word of warning regardless of where you register a name if you do a search for a domain name and return the next day to register it you may find it registered out from under you by a cyber squater. Somehow, somewhere there are people or quasi-people looking at searches and jumping in and registering names for a bounty. So, please be warned and consider registering the name immediately after you search for it.
Step 2. Set Up Hosting.
Some designers, us included, like to have the hosting established so that it can be used during the website design/development process. Hosting for most websites is rather basic. Your designer can specify any special considerations the site may require for hosting.
Note, steps 2 and 3 are many times interchangeable.
Step 3. Design Your Site (or have us do it).
There are a number of ways you can get your site designed. You can do it, you can have a friend do it, or you can have us do it. Yes, we can design your site. Things to consider when choosing a designer are many but the biggies are look and use. Gosh, that sounds a lot like "form and function". There must be a healthy balance. When we design sites we put an emphasis on the user experience from the aesthetics to the load time and compatibility. Oh, and don't forget about search engine optimization considerations as well be wary of too much Flash if you want to be found via search engines.
Step 4. Promote Your Site.
Too often people have the "build it and they will come" mentality with their websites. We like to compare that marketing strategy to that of building a wonderful restaurant in the middle of the desert and expect people from all over to find it. You must promote your site. Consider sending postcards to your prospects or existing clients. Launch a keyword campaign with specific targeted parameters. Hey, you may even want to tell all your followers on Twitter about your new site.
Important consideration: Please be careful about sending unsolicited emails don't, unless people have specifically opted in to receive info from you. Spam will cause termination of services.
